Spearfishing connects many Indigenous people in the northern Great Lakes region to their ancestors and to a sense of shared responsibility for the land, which is why parents, family members, local leaders and community organizations are so invested in teaching the next generation. (AP Video John Locher)On another inland lake, Lac Courte Oreilles, Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Max Wolter and regional team supervisor Angelena Sikora are looking for walleye, too.

They take a motorboat out to strategically placed nets set up at different points on the shoreline, and Sikora gleefully plops each walleye or crappie onto the measuring surface to record its size and sex. If it’s a new individual, she tags it by clipping a fin, then throws it back.Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Max Wolter, right, and regional team supervisor Angelena Sikora remove fish from a net during a fish survey on Lac Courte Oreilles lake Thursday, April 11, 2024, near Hayward, Wis. The goal is an accurate picture of the fish populations of inland lakes, which the DNR gathers in partnership with tribal conservation partners and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. Pooling their data, experts across all groups are noticing signs of change.

“It’s not that the adult walleye are just dying out, it’s that the amount of reproduction isn’t happening at the same levels that it used to, especially in certain water bodies,” Wolter said. GLIFWC director of communications Charlie Rasmussen added that even when young walleye do hatch, they’re having a harder time surviving to adulthood.Tiwari and Chaturvedi both said it’s essential to give waste pickers access to a regular water supply, shade, or a relatively cool building near the landfills. They should also be encouraged to avoid working at high heat and given prompt medical care when they need it, they said.
