This is what she had to say about this extraordinary photo.I took this photo the morning after a
tore through London, Kentucky. People were sifting through debris, looking for salvageable items, especially family photographs, before the next storms.I have photographed tornadoes many times before. Residents, family and friends struggle with the shock of the loss of life and the pulverized landscape.I asked Hailee Allen if I could photograph her and her daughter as they worked to recover what they could. After a while, Hailee emerged high on the rubble pile with this picture and was trying to navigate through the debris. I wanted to emphasize the framed photo but still show the scene, so I backed up and switched to a longer lens with a shallower depth of field. I watched and waited for the light to illuminate the picture.
The sweetness of the portrait she carried and the color palette, echoed in Hailee herself. This moment shows loss, recovery, and resilience. A family photo is a precious thing. For more extraordinary AP photography, click
