Nearly 3,000 fines have been given to motorists for continuing to ignore new traffic-free zones set up around schools in a part of Kent.For the first six months that Medway Council set up so-called 'school streets' around seven sites, drivers who broke the rules were given a warning.
The scheme, which introduces a temporary restriction on traffic in key roads around schools during set hours in the morning and afternoon, was brought into effect on 11 March.
Up until 11 September drivers received a letter reminding them of the ban, but now those who continue to drive within the zones get hit by a £70 fine, reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days."That is [the start of] Alice's classmates' final year at Churchtown and they would have that playground to play in … the legacy of Alice and Bebe," she told BBC Breakfast.
Alan Bowen, who was Alice's favourite teacher, said he could imagine how she would have enjoyed playing with the other children on the new playground's stage."It would be easy to see [her] dancing and performing, singing, twirling her hair and leading everybody else".
He said Alice loved to perform and that the stage would provide a "space where children are going to show off their flair, their sass – and Alice had sass in bucketloads".Alan will not be running the marathon due to his knees, joking "I'm of an age where I can use that as an excuse", but will be supporting those that do.
